Star India has purchased the Digital and Television Broadcasting rights of Indian Premier League (IPL) for five years for Rs. 16,347.5 crores. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) gave its information on Monday.
Star India had made the biggest bid for the broadcast rights of IPL globally. Under this, Star India will now have the rights to broadcast IPL from 2018 to 2022.
Initially, a total of 24 companies had registered for the acquisition of IPL rights. It included companies like Facebook, Amazon, Twitter, Yahoo, Reliance Jio, Star India, Sony Pictures, Discovery, Sky, British Telecom and ESPN Digital Media.
BCCI will benefit from an IPL match of Rs 55 crores, while it will benefit a total of 43 crores from an international level match.
Star India Chairman Uday Shankar said on this occasion, "We believe that IPL is a powerful asset and we also know that the price of this tournament at the level of digital and TV should be increased more and more among fans. After achieving this right, we will be more committed to the development of this game in the country."
Shankar said that India, cricket and IPL have undergone major changes since 2008 and this claim is a glimpse of that change.
These media rights met Star India include mobile, internet and digital rights. At the digital level, viewers use the Hot Star app to watch IPL matches.
Shankar said that watching cricket matches in India has always been a great experience despite the confrontation with the BCCI outside the field.
BCCI Chief Executive Officer Rahul Johari said, "Our main goal is to provide stakeholders a transparent process where there is no doubt in their minds."
Earlier, Sony Network had the right to broadcast the IPL. In 2009, Sony Channel bought the broadcast rights of IPL for $ 1.63 billion from the World Sports Group for nine years.
It is noteworthy that the World Sports Group had acquired the broadcast rights of the IPL for 10 years from the BCCI.
