Sri Lanka Crisis: Supreme Court overturns decision to dissolve Parliament, Ban on election

The Supreme Court of Sri Lanka reversed the move of President Maitripala Sirisena to dissolve Parliament on Tuesday and ordered the ban on preparations for the proposed mid-term elections on January 5. The party office bearers present there told this.

A three-member bench, chaired by Sri Lankan Chief Justice Nalin Pereira, gave the order after a two-day court proceedings filed on the petition in against of about 13 and five filed in favor of Sirisena's November 9 verdict.

The top court gave the order that all petitions related to Sirisena's decision will now be heard on four, five and six December. The petitioners include Ratnajivan Hule, a member of the Independent Election Commission along with various parties.

Sirisena dissolved Parliament and issued orders to hold mid-term elections on January 5. The country was trapped in unprecedented crisis by this.
