Sikkim is getting the benefit of unrest in Darjeeling this season with highest earning money in terms of tourism, because tourists are turning to Sikkim instead of Darjeeling due to Gorkha Janmukti Morcha movement. Sikkim Tourism Secretary C. Jangpo said, "There has been a sudden spurt in the tourism industry due to tension in Darjeeling."
Due to the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha movement in Darjeeling, many domestic and foreign tourists planning to go there have canceled their booking and they have planned to go to Sikkim.
Jangpo said, "There are so many customers in the tourism related establishments in Gangtok and the booking has been completed for the next several days."
Sikkim Tourism Secretary said that almost all the tourists who came to visit Sikkim were either going to Darjeeling in their second phase of the trip or before they came here they went to Darjeeling. Travel operators are concerned that managing such a large number of tourists is difficult and the secretary also expressed this kind of concern.
Jangpo said, "We have been asked to provide maximum number of the tourists without compromising service standards with travel operators and hotels, because of any kind of mismanagement in this regard can lead to the defamation of the tourism industry."
Shantanu Bose, a tourist from Kolkata, said, "We went to Darjeeling to make the holidays, but only then it became all (movement). Our travel agent immediately contacted the operators in Sikkim and we were fortunate that we got the booking. "Bose told the media here that many tourists had to return from Darjeeling due to lack of booking.
