Due to demonstration against the eligibility of recruitment of women police constable in Madhya Pradesh, nine women arrested have alleged that they were subjected to a pregnancy test after taking them into custody. However, the police and jail officials rejected the charge saying that the rules have been followed.
Police arrested nine women under Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan in Bhopal on Wednesday during the program organized at Lal Parade Ground under section 151 of IPC (despite being asked to separate).
The arrested women were demanding relaxation in the length in the police constable recruitment. Last year, the Chief Minister had announced the exemption during the recruitment of 14 thousand police constables in the state.
However, Chauhan did not take any step towards this, the women who were 19 to 21 years old, claimed that they were given the assurance that a relaxation of three centimeters would be given in the length. They said that they were rejected because their length were less than 158 centimeters. But if they were given three centimeters, they would have been able to do it.
After release from jail on Thursday, all women met Congress leader Dipti Singh and then state Congress chief Kamal Nath. They told the reporters that they were harassed by the jail staffs and the police. In prison, their pregnancy test were performed without consent.
One candidate Anju Bhadauriya said, "We were treated like a criminal. First of all, we were stationed in Bhopal in the police van for three hours. Our mobile phones were taken. We were not allowed to speak to our parents. At night we were taken to the jail, where we were taken to a room and taken to our urine. We knew that our pregnancy test is going on. But, most surprised at the time when the jail male staff was peeping inside."
