Two people, including the main accused, have been arrested after a video of two women from the Kuki-Zomi community in the Indian state of Manipur being paraded naked in Meitei-dominated Thoubal district went viral.

This incident took place on May 4, 2023, in which two women of the Kuki community were paraded naked. One of these women was also allegedly gang-raped.

The FIR for the incident which took place on May 4, 2023 was registered on May 18, 2023. The video of the incident surfaced through social media on Wednesday, July 19, 2023, following which the first arrest in the case took place on Thursday, July 20, 2023.

Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh called the incident a crime against humanity and demanded capital punishment for the culprits.

Following heavy ruckus on Thursday, July 20, 2023, the first day of the Monsoon Session, both Houses of Parliament were adjourned till 11 a.m. on Friday, July 21, 2023.

Opposition parties have given notice under rule 193 in the Lok Sabha and under rule 176 and 267 in the Rajya Sabha for debate on Manipur, demanding a debate on the issue in principle.

Meanwhile, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, taking suo motu cognizance of the matter, has sent a notice to the Central Government.

Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey said that she has directed the DGP to nab and punish the culprits and also to take action against the policemen who were posted at the concerned police station.

An FIR was registered in Kangpokpi district on 18 May 2023 regarding this incident. After this the case was sent to the concerned police station Thoubal.

According to the FIR, when the village of Kuki in the Meitei-dominated area was burnt down, these women along with their families fled to save their lives and were rescued by the police, but when the police were taking them away, a mob pulled them from the police cordon. took.

According to the FIR, a woman's father and brother were murdered in front of her and then the woman was gang-raped in public.

Women's Commission instructed Twitter to remove the video

The National Commission for Women of India has taken cognizance of the matter and has instructed Twitter to remove its videos from its platform.

The National Commission for Women has formally given instructions to Twitter's Public Policy Department in this regard.

The Women's Commission says that the identity of the victim is being revealed in this video and it is a punishable offence.

After the video went viral, there is an atmosphere of anger across the country regarding the situation in Manipur.

The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, in a conversation with the media outside Parliament on Thursday, July 20, 2023, before the commencement of the Monsoon Session, expressed grief over the Manipur incident and said, "How many are the sinners, who is in their place, But the whole country is being insulted. 140 crore countrymen are feeling ashamed. The culprits will not be spared.''

Opposition parties have surrounded the Modi government regarding Manipur violence and raised questions as to why Prime Minister Narendra Modi is not going to Manipur.

Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge said, "Manipur is burning, women are being raped, paraded naked and the PM is sitting silently and making statements outside."

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, MP Jaya Bachchan, Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati, Union Minister Smriti Irani, AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi, Shiv Sena leader Aditya Thackeray, Samajvadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav, Maharashtra Congress President Nana Patole, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, Chhattisgarh Deputy CM TS Singhdeo, Congress Spokesperson Supriya Shrinate, RJD leader and Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav have condemned the incident and The government has been accused of not taking any concrete steps.
