Large Population in Favor of the Independence of Kurdistan

Historical voting took place in the referendum for independence in Iraq's Kurd region.

Counting of votes is going on and for the independence of Kurdistan, there is a hope of a big victory after the votes that are given in favor of 'yes'.

Kurds say that these voting will give them the mandate to negotiate separately, but Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Awadi described it as unconstitutional.

Turkey and Iran, neighboring countries of Iraq, have warned to stop turmoil and stop export of oil, in view of the possibility of unrest among Kurdish minorities in their countries.

The US has also described this referendum as extremely disappointing.

The USA said, "We believe that this step will create instability and difficulties between the Kurd region and the people living there."

During the referendum, the peace doing in the occupied areas of Kurd armies, including three states. However Iraq claims on the territory.

According to the Election Commission, 72 percent of the people took part in the referendum.

However, according to the Kurdish website RUDAW, 90 percent of the people voted in favor of independence.

After the referendum in the Kurdistan region's capital, Irbil and the disputed city Kirkuk, celebrating views.

Curfew was imposed on Monday night due to fear of unrest in these places.

33-year-old Diyar Abubakra told the AFP news agency, "Today is the day of our independence. Because of this, I have worn my traditional outfit, which I specifically bought for this occasion."

Kurds share between 15 to 20 percent of Iraq's total population.

Before attaining autonomy in 1991, they had to face repression for decades.

In areas controlled by the Kurds, on Monday, voting began for nearly 52 lakh Kurds and non-Kurdish people over 18 years of age.

Even though there is conflict between the Kurds and the Iraqi government about some things in non-Kurdish areas.

In the disputed city of Kirkuk, local Arab and Ottoman communities boycotted referendum.
