Jammu and Kashmir sex scandal: 5 people sentenced to 10 years

A CBI court in India has sentenced five persons, including a former DIG of Border Security Force (BSF) to 10 years in the 2006 Jammu and Kashmir sex scandal case. The sentence was pronounced by Special CBI Judge Gagangeet Kaur.

The persons who have been sentenced. They include K C Padhi, former Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of BSF, former Deputy Inspector General of Jammu and Kashmir, Mohammad Ashraf Mir, Maqsood Ahmed, Shabir Ahmed Langu and Shabir Ahmed Lavay.

The court also imposed a penalty of one lakh rupees on KC Padhi and Mohammad Ashraf Mir. If they do not pay the fine, they will have to suffer an additional rigorous imprisonment for one year. The court also imposed a penalty of fifty thousand rupees on Maqsood Ahmed, Shabir Ahmed Langu and Shabir Ahmed Lavay, and if they do not pay them then they will have to suffer further imprisonment for six months. The court had convicted the five on May 30 in the case.

The court acquitted two convicts, including the then Solicitor general of Jammu and Kashmir. In Jammu and Kashmir, sex scandal was made headlines in 2006, when the Jammu and Kashmir Police recovered two CDs in which Kashmiri minor girls were shown sexually harassing. These five persons were convicted under section 376 of the Penal Code.

The main accused, Sabina and her husband Abdul Hamid Bulla, who allegedly used to run a brothel, died during their hearing. During the investigation Jammu and Kashmir Police prepared a list of 56 suspects for alleged involvement in sex scandal, which included some high profile people. The case was handed over to the CBI in 2006, when there were also names of some ministers.

Later this year, the Supreme Court had transferred the case to Chandigarh. The then Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, submitted his resignation in 2009, when an opposition leader linked him to this matter. The Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, however, did not accept his resignation.
